My dog can't keep water down and is lethargic. ER vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 6 lbs

Hi. My dog is about 3 years old. She's a highly enthusiastic pound puppy and we have had her for about 6 months. Today she is sick. Off food .Drinking lots of water, throwing up water, lethargic, earlier in the day was lying down when we tried to walk her. She is lying down mostly now and looks sad in the face. Has had all preventitive meds. Last night her tummy was gurgling. Should I take her to emergency vet or watch what happens? Thanks Liz.

Poor Prints! I do get concerned when a dog can't keep down water, and in my opinion, that does warrant a visit to the ER vet. Not being able to keep down water when a dog is already sick and off food can quickly lead to dehydration. I do think taking Prints into the vet is best. She will likely need a shot to stop the vomiting, may need IV fluids, and any other treatment the vet deems necessary depending on the case of her vomiting (i.e. GI illness, pancreatitis, a foreign body, or eating something rotten).
