My intact male dog's penis bled after humping. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mastiff | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 138 lbs

Male mastiff 19 mts old not fixed. Our neighbors jack russell is in heat my dog has started spraying the house and humping pretty much anything. Today I came home to find blood all over the kitchen and his penis fully extended with a large lump in between his scrotum and penis. I noticed the blood was coming from his penis. I place him in the tub with warm water he began spraying blood and another liquid after some time his penis when back to normal and the lump gone. Do I need to see the vet?

All that humping and masturbating probably irritated his prostate so much that it started to bleed. If the bleeding stopped and his urine does not look bloody either, then this was probably a one-time episode. If you do not intend to use Zeus for breeding, then I suggest you have him neutered, as he will react like that for every female within 2 miles when she is in heat. This is a lot of stress for a male uncastrated dog. If you think there is more bleeding, better have Zeus checked out by your veterinarian.
