Dog eye ulcer with blood, swelling, crust. Can a specialist save it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog had an ulcer. I was giving drops as scheduled. After coming home on the third day of treatment his eye looked like blood inside of it and the upper and lower lids (all around eye were swollen). Kept giving drops along with blood serum but a crust formed over the eye. Dog is in great spirits (Saturday the blood in eye happened and it is now Tuesday) and doesn't seem painful. Any chance the eye can be saved by an opthemologist? Not sure if I should consult or do enucleation

If there is no pain, there is no rush for an enucleation. I would opt for a consultation with a veterinary ophthalmologist, There are techniques other than eye drops to protect the eye and give it time to heal. If the eye drops contain neomycin, stop using them as some dogs have an adverse reaction to them. Try to get an appointment with an ophthalmologist this week as this is urgent. You may also consult with your vet in the meantime about changing the antibiotic used.

I think a consult is always worth it, as if there is a chance his eye can be saved, it's worth finding out. I would go for the consult, and the ophthalmologist can give the best opinion on if the eye can be saved or not.
