Why does my dog get hives and swelling after eating strange things?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 2 months old

MY JACK RUSSELL/PUG CROSS HAS OCCASIONAL BOUTS OF A PUZZLING CONDITION. HIS FACE SWELLS UP, HE GETS WELTS/BUMPS ON HIS SKIN ALL OVER HIS BODY , LEGS ETC AND IT DRIVES HIM MAD WITH THE IRRITATION. HE DOES,NT HAVE A TEMPERATURE AND THE "ATTACK" COMES AND GOES IN 24/36 HOURS. I THINK ITS SOMETHING HE INGESTS AS HE WILL EAT ANYTHING FROM MOTHS TO SLUGS AND SNAILS TO RABBIT DROPPINGS. I FEEL HELPLESS WHEN IT HAPPENS AND WONDERED IF YOU HAD ANY IDEAS ? THANK YOU

It could be something he ingests, could be his food or treats. It could also be due to insects or something else in his environment. Benadryl tablets can usually help with this type of allergic reaction, so make sure you always have some at home.
