My cat has a short, squeaky cough. Is it asthma or hairballs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 3 months old

I've been reading a lot about Feline Asthma lately, and I'm not sure if my cat has it or not. He was coughing of what I thought that was a hairball, but I'm not so sure. His coughing seems to have a squeak with it, and it only lasted for like 30 seconds and he was fine after that. Other than that he is completely fine, running, eating, playing etc. One day he woke up with a bit of raspy voice and I'm not so sure if those two are connected, although he seems fine I can't help feeling worried!

If this coughing happens rarely and just for 30-60 seconds, it's more likely to be hairballs, asthma tends to happen more often and for a longer time. Try providing him a supplement for hairballs on a regular basis and see if it make it disappear.
