Why are my dog's eyes red with busted vessels after playing hard?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boston Terrier | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 20 lbs

Luna just turned 1 and she's very active, loves life! We noticed 2 days ago her whites of her eyes are red and looks like busted blood vessels. No signs of trauma or pain and she's her normal self. Eats, sleeps, plays, etc. I don't think it's cherry eye. She has been playing very hard with Briar who's a lab. Thank u!

It does look as though Luna has some broken/leaky blood vessels in her eye. This usually happens with trauma. If she seems otherwise normal I would not worry about it. The redness will resolve in a few days. Watch for any swelling around the eye, and discharge or pawing/rubbing the eye. These signs mean that the eye is uncomfortable and will need to be checked out.
