Dog has crusty skin, hair loss, and vet says allergies, but no itch?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old | 76 lbs

For the last 4 mos or so, my 9 yr old mix lab started having crusty lesions that flake off and have a sore underneath and the hair comes off. They don't have any drainage, no s/s infection. SHE DOESN'T SCRATCH. The lesions are scattered all over where she has fur. She has 2-3 at a time. Took her to vet, says allergies & tx w/ Simplecef & Hexachlor-K. Took her back 2 mo later & tx w/ Simplecef & Temeril P, says allergies. meds help but it comes back. If it's allergies, why doesn't she itch

Not all dogs itch with allergies. Some just have sensitive skins and just gets skin infections easily. If the crusts are coming back quickly, she may need a longer course of antibiotics. I would also consider switching her to a grain free food that doesn't have chicken or beef in it. This may help with some of her sensitivities. You can also bathe her weekly to help prevent these infections. Your vet could give you an appropriate shampoo. I hope this helps.
