Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | 10 years and 3 months old
Hello. I have a question for my 10 year old, mixed breed, male dog. About half a year ago he was diagnosed with some kind of liver failure after runing the basic blood test that gives an example for kineys, sugar lever, liver,.. Because we noticed heavy weight loss, uncontrolled urinating and drinking. The results was a slight red mark targeting the liver working. The pet prescribed a 100% dry food hepatic diet. After about 6 months we should do another blood test to se any improve (PART 1)

If you haven't already I would have your vet run a bile acids test to confirm that the liver isn't properly functioning. You can also have a ultrasound and/or biopsy done by a specialist if you want a specific diagnosis to help guide his treatment. There are many things that can cause the liver enzymes to elevate besides liver failure. Granted if the albumin was low or there were other values that were also indicative of liver failure then this may be a different story. I have dogs that have been on the liver food long term and have done great on it. These labels are there because they do not want them to be used without the supervision of a veterinarian. I have found that if your dog is in need of the liver food to help his liver process it then this is likely what will help him in the long run. BUT if you are interested in making his diet at home then you may want to consider going onto balanceit.com . This website has several recipes for homemade diets and you can adjust them according to different conditions so you may be able to find a liver diet. Finally I am not sure what medications your vet has Beni on but I would definitely recommend a liver supplement like denamarin or denosyl long term. I hope this helps!
