My dog won't eat but seems normal. Is it heat or new food needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 45 lbs

Our dog (turned 1 in May 2017) didn't eat food at all today and hasn't yet today (its 2pm). She normally eats two meals a day. She hasn't been unusually tired/groggy/"out of it" and seems normal. Is it the summer heat or is it time to switch dog food?

Heat can definitely throw a dog off her appetite. Offering a meal tonight once it has cooled off may encourage her to eat, you can also entice her with a little boiled chicken if needed. However, if she continues to refuse, or starts to show other signs of illness such as lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, etc, seeking veterinary care to rule out any other underlying issues is a good idea.
