Why is my dog scratching his watery eyes and keeping them shut?

My dog keeps scratching his eyes and they are very watery. He's keeping his eyes closed which is rare for him. Is he ok or is he just tired? Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | unneutered | 5 lbs

Persistent squinting and itching is normally associated with pain and discomfort sch as from an eye ulcer. Try bathing the eyes with sterile saline eye wash or cooled boiled water but if the condition persists over the following 1-2hours you should have him assessed by your vet to rule out painful eye or eyelid conditions
