New puppy vomiting, diarrhea, not eating. Should I call the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 8 days old | 15 lbs

Brought home our puppy 3 days ago- 12 wk old goldendoodle. Ate and drank good the first day and yesterda morn, but last nightand this morning wasn't interested in food or water. Takes a couple bites here and there and some water- nothing crazy. Then this morning she dry heaved a little and vomited what appeared to be stomach acid. Then proceeded to have diarrhea. Behaving normal otherwise. Should we go the the local vet? Is she still just adjusting to a new living environment and different food?

Congrats on your new family member! Gracie has gone through a lot of transitions in the last few days, including a food change. Dogs, and especially puppies, often get upset stomach with a rapid diet change. Puppies can also get gastrointestinal parasites that cause diarrhea and vomiting. You could try switching her to a bland diet of boiled low-fat chicken breast and rice for about 5 days and then gradually, over the next 5 days, switch her to her new long-term puppy food. However if the vomiting or diarrhea continues, she should be seen by your vet to rule out parasites or a more serious problem as puppies can quickly become dehydrated.

It could be from stress and new food but she could also have a parasite or infection. It would be a good idea to have a vet test a stool sample for parasites as they are common in young puppies. She may need a dewormer or other medications to control the vomiting and diarrrhea. You could also add a probiotic to her diet and see if that helps. Congratulations on the new puppy!
