My dog has been licking the inside of the right back leg to the point of open skin and hair loss. I was wondering if I should bring him in to get it looked at or tested for anything? Also, what is the best way to heal this spot? We have been putting sour orange around the wound right now so he won't lick it. As a side note- He did have surgery on that knee in February but hasn't been bothering him for weeks.

It looks like he has a bacterial skin infection so he should be examined by your vet for treatment. Your vet can prescribe an antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or a corticosteroid to help treat the condition. He could have allergies so he may need to stay on an anti-histamine long term. You could also bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo, like Epi-Soothe, and see if that helps. You could also add Free Form Snip Tips to his diet to help keep his skin and coat healthy.

An e-collar (cone) may be more effective in preventing further licking. Since the skin is broken, Cooper may need antibiotics to prevent or treat infection. He should be examined by your veterinarian and then have medications dispensed. The knee should be rechecked anyway since licking may be an indication of discomfort or pain.
