Why is my dog's eye bloody, losing vision, and pupil not dilating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | unneutered | 5 years and 3 months old | 60 lbs

In November my dog had some trauma to his left eye, the pupil was at a pin point so we took him to the vet, they did test to make sure that he had no damage to his eye. Ever since he has had issues were they pupil will no dilate properly. Before the incident he already had issues with his vision in that eye now it's almost completely gone and tonight there is what looks like blood at the bottom of the iris.

Based on the picture it does look like there could be blood inside his eye, which is called hyphema. It likely means there is inflammation present within the eye, which could be related to the original injury. If he has vision problems in that eye or its painful (squinting, tearing, or pawing at it), I would definitely take him back to the vet. They will likely want to check the pressure within the eye and look at his retina. He may need drops to help with the inflammation.

I would recommend another visit with your veterinarian and a consultation with an ophthalmologist if your vet isn't able to determine a cause. I would be concerned if there has been no trauma to the eye about glaucoma, or unfortunately a tumor in the eye or behind the eye. Your vet may be able to see this or it may require equipment used by the specialist. It looks like you live in Savannah and there is an Animal Eye Clinic in your area, so you shouldn't have to travel too far to see a specialist!
