My dog has a sudden red, firm bump near her eye. What could it be?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Neapolitan Mastiff | Female | spayed | 2 years and 2 months old | 85 lbs

My dog had a red bump on her face last summer. It showed up quickly, and was gone in three or so days before I had time to take her to the vet.. Now she has it again right by her eye near the tear duct. It wasn't there this morning, like last time it puffed up fast. It's like a huge pimple with no visible puss. It is slightly firm and red and angry looking. Maybe a spider bite? But I don't see any bite marks.

This could be an insect bite, a blockage of a tear duct (though I would expect that swelling to be more on the lower lid), an allergic reaction, a bacterial infection, an ingrown hair follicle, and more. If your dog seems comfortable, you can try applying a cool compress to the area if it appears itchy/painful. If it doesn't seem itchy or uncomfortable or warm you could also try a warm compress and then gently massaging the area in case it is blockage of a tear duct. If the swelling is still there tomorrow, I would schedule and appointment for your vet to check it out.
