My German Shepherd puppy might be pregnant. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | | 70 lbs

My 8 month German Shepherd was in heat about 2 weeks ago and she was exposed with my 3 year old male German Shepherd, they are both not spayed. I'm afraid she may be pregnant and if she is what should I do? I don't want to lose my own dog but if its safe I would like for her to still continue the pregnancy.

Bella is still a puppy, and growing, so a pregnancy will be a bit of extra stress on the body. It would be best to bring Bella to your local vet to confirm the pregnancy. Your vet can also help you determine when she may be due to have the puppies (usually 60-63 days after conception) , and can help you make sure both she and the puppies develop well. If she is pregnant, switching to a puppy food diet later in her pregnancy can help ensure she has enough energy for herself and milk production. Reading up on pregnancy and whelping online can also help you prepare for puppies and care of Bella.
