The first step is to have your dog evaluated by a veterinary ophthalmologist. The doctor willl determine the extent of cataracts and if surgery is recommended. Not all cataracts require surgical removal. If surgery is recommended, further diagnostics will be performed to determine overall retinal health, and this will determine the prognosis for visual improvement after surgery. The equipment and expertise needed for cataract surgery is very precise. Therefore the cost involved can considerably more expensive than other procedures. Also frequent follow up examinations and medications are necessary for the optimal surgical outcome. All of this will be discussed at your initial visit with the ophthalmologist, and estimates for cost will be provided. My advice is discuss referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist with your veterinarian!

At this time cataracts can only be removed by surgery in dogs and cats. And this surgery requires a veterinary ophthalmologist to do so as it is very delicate, requires specialized equipment and extensive training. You may look into something like care credit which works to cover medical bills as a medical credit card.
