How often to feed an adult cat transitioning food to manage weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 months and 20 days old | 13 lbs

When would be the best time of day to feed Mars? He's being switched over right now to adult food (Simply Nourish Kitten Food to IAMS Healthy Adult). He wakes up at 5:30-6:00am and starts playing with stuff and I'll put him in his cage until I get up for work at 9:00am. I go to college in the Fall so I don't know if I should feed him a night or in the morning. He's also a little heavy because he's big in length but not fat, vet said he's possibly a MaineCoon mix.

Mars sounds like a busy guy! I bet he's fun to have around! So in the wild, cats eat 9-16 times a day. Their metabolism is geared to run constantly so feeding only 1-2 meals a day may actually predispose Max to becoming more heavy. I recommend to measure out the appropriate amount of food (most cats eat between 3/4 to one cup total a day) and periodically feed him. My own cats eat between 4-6 meals a day depending on my work schedule.
