My dog has a cheek lump & eye discharge. Should I get a second opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | spayed | 9 years old | 70 lbs

Seeking a 2nd opinion on my lab. She has had a lump on her cheek for 3 years. It used to come, swell, and go, now it is open all the time, oozes, and her eye also has a mucous discharge. Our vet thought it was an abscess 3 years ago, now when I took her last month, he said he's not sure if it's tooth related or a mast cell tumor and that I could keep treating her with neosporin. She is 9 years old with anxiety issues, so although I want another opinion, I hate to take her to multiple vets.

Poor Maggie! It looks like she may have a tooth root abscess. In these cases, the tooth needs to be removed and she needs to be on antibiotics or the infection will continue to occur. I would recommend getting a second opinion. If it is a tooth root abscess, she will need to undergo a dental procedure with anesthesia so that x-rays can be taken, and the proper tooth removed. If it is thought that she has a tumor, simply applying Neosporin will not resolve the situation and proper removal of the mass should be discussed.
