Sometimes the best thing to try with respect to diarrhea first (prior to seeing a vet) would be fasting for 12-24 hours, then providing a diet of boiled skinless chicken and rice. Do this for about 2-3 days before gradually resuming the normal diet. In a young dog like buddy, dietary indiscretion would not surprise me in the least. Another possible cause of diarrhea could be the presence of GI parasites. You can bring in a fecal sample to the vet to have them take a look at it microscopically. They will tell you if they see anything of note, and what drugs if any are required to get the situation under control. In terms of medications that are safe for dogs and cats in my experience, pepto bismol is one that I have had some limited success with. You can also looked into probiotics for dogs such as FortiFlora, which can be purchased at most pet stores or on Amazon. Hope this helps and that your puppy feels better soon!
