Why does my dog have skin bumps, hair loss, and scabs near eyes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Black and Tan Coonhound | Female | spayed | 2 years and 8 months old | 55 lbs

My dog has had something going on with her skin. I first noticed it around one eye with small bumps and hair thinning. It would clear up and then show up a few days later in the other eye. Now she has red scabby patches with thinning hair on her head under one of her ears.

Hello. I am sorry that Annie has issues with her skin. Small bumps and thinning hair can be due to a few different things, however the most likely would be a skin infection. It could also just be scabs from chronic scratching. Usually scratching like that will occur if she has an infection inside her ears, or possible parasites in her skin (mites) that would make her itchy in that region. I would recommend a visit to the vet. They will do a physical exam, and may want to take some samples or swabs of the area to see if there is an infection or mites. They should be able to get to the bottom of what is causing this and fix it. Good luck with Annie.
