How to switch dog food and mix wet and dry for a picky eater?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 4 months and 29 days old | 18 lbs

My vet told me that she had not heard of the ProPac kibbles. This was the food he came with from his breeder. His vet gave me a bag of Science Hill kibbles, i would like to start him on it, but im not sure how much old and how much new? I was currently mixing some ProPlan canned food with the kibbles because he was regusing to eat them dry. Is that a good idea? He loves the canned food. Now one concern i have is that i set his bowl down he eats some and walks away or is easily distracted. HELP

Buddy is adorable! Science diet is a great food and I highly recommend it. I would start by mixing 75% old food 25% new food and feed that for a couple of days. Then go to 50% old and 50% new food, and feed that for a couple of days. Move him to 25% old food and 75% new food for another couple of days, and then feed him 100% new food only. It's fine to add in some ProPlan canned food as well, and you can slowly decrease the amount you give him over two weeks until he is eating the dry food only. I hope this helps!
