My senior cat is losing weight. Could he be in pain? What food helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 16 years old | 9 lbs

My 16 year old cat Dasher has been losing weight. We feed him 2 times a day. It doesn't seem to satisfy him. The vet states that he has a small cyst or tumor by his stomach. He doesn't think it's the reason why Dasher is losing the weight. We opted not to have the surgery to have the lump removed because of his age. I very concerned if he is in pain. Is there anything else that I could do for him? What time of food? He does eat a lot of wet food.

Hello There are lots of potential causes for an older cat to lose weight including an overactive thyroid gland, diabetes, kidney disease, and intestinal disease. Some of these diseases can be managed with medication. Some of these issues can be tested for by your veterinarian with lab tests or an ultrasound. Your veterinarian can also reassess your cats pain level and tell you if that is the reason why your cat is losing weight but typically cats eat less when in pain. The next step is to re-consult with your family veterinarian about if they would do any of the test for any of those conditions. In the meantime continue to monitor your cats food and water intake closely as well a try to weigh your cat weekly.
