Vet recommended phenobarbital for dog's focal seizures. Is it right?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 44 lbs

My dog lived in Sinai, Egypt as a street dog for 2-3 years. I know she was poisioned (but not seriously) and abused, she has lived with me for over 3 years now but in the last 2 weeks, she has started having focal seizures, usually just her face or her back legs. Her bloods were fine apart from kidneys, but a urine sample was ok apart from a little dehydrated. She is a good weight (20kg) The vet is recommending we start on 40mg phenobarbital every 12 hours. Is this the right step to take?

Hello! Sinai is by the way one of my favorite places on earth :). the symptoms Bobbi is experiencing are worrying, and as it seems to have been classified as seizures i believe this is the right thing to do as in many cases the reason for the seizures are never found but a drug such as phenobarbital will in most cases control the seizures.
