We have returned from holiday to find that our lurcher (short-haired) has dandruff around his rump. He was looked after at home by a pet sitter and kept on his usual diet. Could the condition be stress-related? What should we try first to cure it?

Poor Marcus! Some dogs can develop some temporary flaky skin and increased shedding as a result of stress - we see this often in the veterinary clinic, actually. You can try bathing him in an aloe and oatmeal dog shampoo to help soothe and moisturize the skin, and get rid of the flakes that are present. Now that you're home and he shouldn't be stressed anymore, this may be all you need to do to resolve the issue. If the flaky skin persists, you could also try adding a daily omega-3 fatty acid supplement such as Welactin to his food every day - this often helps with mild dryness and flaking, in dogs that are otherwise healthy.
