If this has just started this evening it is possible your dog got something irritating (dirt, etc.) into his eye. You can pick up a sterile eye wash solution at the drug store and rinse his eye very thoroughly with the solution in hopes of removing any debris. If his eye is still bothering him tomorrow- if it is still red/watering/he is squinting or rubbing/there are white or cloudy spots on the eye, then a vet visit is needed to evaluate the eye. He could have a scratch or ulcer on the cornea (surface of the eye) that is causing irritation. He could have an infection or inflammation in the eye. If his eye becomes increasingly painful or starts to look enlarged/bulging tonight then this could be a sign of a more serious issue such as glaucoma and would be considered an emergency.
