My dog has red swelling on the outside corner of his eye. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever | Male | unneutered | 11 years and 2 months old | 50 lbs

My dog has red swelling on the outside corner of his eye - guessing it's the third eyelid that's swollen. Has progressed over past week and become more swollen

Poor Bristol! The third eyelid is actually located on the inner corner of the eye, so this is not what is swollen in the photo. In fact, this is a rather unusual part of the eye to see swelling like this in my experience - I would be concerned that it may be a tumor of some kind, or some type of infection or abscess involving the tissue around the eye. I would definitely recommend taking him to the vet to have this checked as soon as you are able to. Your vet can do some diagnostic testing such as a fine needle aspirate if needed to help determine what is causing the swelling in this area. Bristol may need medication such as antibiotics or anti-inflammatories to treat the problem, or he may even need surgery if the swelling is related to a mass or tumor near the eye.
