My cat has a recurring neck cyst. Should I get it surgically removed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Devon Rex | Male | neutered | 16 years and 8 months old | 16 lbs

My 17 y.o. neut male Devon Rex has cyst abt the size of a small BB on his neck approx 1" below right pinnae & in proximity to his spine. He's had this bump for about 6 mos & vet has completely drained 3 times (it flattened) & sent a sample for cytology/pathology ea time with no result indicating neoplasia or infection. Each time it reinflates & seems larger. The color of the contents look bluish or amber (clear). The vet thinks I am overly worrying about it, but watch-and-wait is not on my list.

If you are concerned that Sidney's cyst is more than it seems I would talk to your vet about having it surgically removed. Typically cysts are benign (non-cancerous) and just need to be occasionally drained. However sometime they can bother the cat (and the owner) enough that they need to be removed. If you do decide to have it surgically removed I would recommend having the whole thing sent out for biopsy. This way you can know for sure if it is something you need to be concerned about.
