My young dog has a squishy lump. Could it be cancer or a tumor?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 73 lbs

I noticed while grooming my 14 month old male standard poodle today that he has an enlarged lump on his back rear. It is movable and kinda squishy but doesn't seem too sensitive to him. With him being so young, I am concerned as to what this could be. He is not overweight whatsoever, possibly underweight just due to activity I suppose. Would fatty tumor or even cancer be a suspect at this age?

Presley is young, and although cancer can strike at any age, I think it's unlikely. Even fatty/benign tumors (lipomas) typically don't show up until dogs are older, however it's really impossible to know exactly what this is just by looking at it or feeling it. It could be an abscess, a reaction to a foreign object in that area, or a tumor of some type (either benign or malignant). A definitive diagnosis will come by doing a fine needle aspirate (sticking a small needle into the lump and withdrawing some cells) and examining the results under a microscope. With that information, treatment decisions can be made, if necessary.
