Why does my 5-month-old puppy have a cloudy eye? Is it cataracts?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cocker Spaniel | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 26 days old

My Cocker Spaniel puppy (F) is 5 months & last week noticed a huge lump under the neck & was identified due to an infection of a broken tooth & was treated & healed. Yesterday I have observed that there’s a bluish-white cloud on her right eye all of a sudden. And I’m worried whether it’s Cataracts or Nuclear Sclerosis. Can a 5 months puppy get these eye problems? We have taken the puppy to the vet & he has given some eye drops for a week to observe first .Can you please help me? Thanks.

Oh dear, poor Millie! Yes, unfortunately, it is possible for young puppies to develop cataracts, but these are typically congenital (inherited). Nuclear sclerosis is a benign aging chance and I would not expect to see this in a 5 month old puppy. If possible, consider taking Millie to a veterinary ophthalmologist for evaluation. If a cataract is diagnosed, she will likely need to have surgery. I hope that all goes well!
