My unvaccinated puppy has a fever and won't eat. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My puppy, Sydney, has never received his vaccinations yet. Last night, i noticed he is hot and appears to have fever. He lost his energy and refuses to eat and drink. He is also not yet dewormed. What could be the reason behind these?

In a puppy who hasn't had vaccinations we worry about parvovirus which can cause fever along with decreased appetite and as the disease progresses, vomiting and diarrhea. Canine distemper can also cause fever/lethargy/decreased appetite. With those cases we can also see respiratory signs such as green nasal and eye discharge and eventually neurological symptoms. We can also see milder cases of illness such as severe parasitism or kennel cough. The safest thing to do is get your pup in to the vet ASAP because dogs this young can deteriorate quickly.
