My adopted cat is reserved and won't bond. How can I help her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 5 months and 27 days old

Like I've mentioned before, I adopted her. She's been with me for 1 week. Before I got her, she has hostile towards ppl, hissing to anyone who got near the cage. When I adopted her, she allowed me to pick her up and carry her. I want to understand her. All the pets I've had have been very affectionate. But she's reserved with me. She loves my dogs rubs on them and purrs but she runs when I come close. It's frustrating for me as I want to bond with her and it's difficult. My first cat.

Congrats on your adoption. Nervous or previously feral (wild) cats can take a lot of time to warm up to people, but with patience And time she will come around and will bond closely with you. Keep the house calm and quiet and allow her to come explore you on her terms. Find toys and treats that she really likes and can associate with you giving her.
