My budgie mated but isn't laying eggs. She has existing chicks. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female

It's been 20 days since my budgie first mated. She hasn't laid eggs yet nor does she spend time in nestbox. She has 3 babies around 28 days old in the nestbox. Out of these 20 days, she mated 6 days. Also she seems close to another friend of hers. She begs him to feed her. But I am sure they haven't mated yer. Her new partner won't let her old mate(daddy) come near her. Please help. Thanks.

That's a lot of birds in one enclosure. If you're looking to continue breeding your budgies you may want to separate them into pairs in each cage environment to prevent jealousy and fighting over potential mates. Also, the female may not lay eggs if she is not currently ready to, or if she is still taking care of previous hatchlings. Female budgies when ready to lay will typically lay an egg every 2-3 days, however they can mate much more than this in between laying.
