How can I help my nervous, previously abused cat feel less anxious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Somali | Female | spayed | 12 years and 4 months old | 6 lbs

I've had my cat for more than 6 years, now. She was rescued from an extremely abusive home, and I was told that she might have long-lasting effects from this, but could heal if I gave her a routine. I tried my best to aid in normalcy for her -- I gave her a routine, I'm very gentle with her --, but she's still 'strange'. Penny will only eat in my bedroom, and never, ever meows. She's always very low-energy and nervous, and hides. Can she still be trained to be 'normal', and not anxious?

If it's been six years, it may be that Penelope just has a bit of a nervous personality. If she was feral or abused previously she may not ever get to "normal" cat standards. However, a complete checkup at your vet to rule out any underlying health issues such as pain or illness may help, as well as speaking with a veterinary behaviorist in your area. They can suggest potential plans of training/medication to help make Penelope less stressed and more comfortable.
