My dog has explosive watery diarrhea but acts normal. When to see vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 9 years and 1 month old | 98 lbs

My dog had a bout of explosive diarrhea yesterday and last evening. No substance to it at all, just like muddy water. He's 9 years old and on Trifexis or I'd think it was whip worms. I gave him pumpkin and rice to try to calm the situation. His behavior and appetite are completely normal, but since it's a Saturday and my vet won't be in tomorrow, just wondering if I should wait until Monday or see if they can see him today.

Poor Riley! He may have gotten into something that has upset his stomach and intestines. If he isn't vomiting, just the diarrhea alone may resolve with time, and you can wait until Monday. You'll have to let him out a lot so he doesn't have accidents in the house. If he starts vomiting, or if the diarrhea is bloody, or if he seems very depressed and droopy, you shouldn't wait until Monday. The pumpkin has fiber and this might cure the diarrhea alone. Good luck!
