My dog threw up a strange particle. When should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 3 years and 4 months old | 65 lbs

My dog threw up after eating this AM. Vomit was mostly his food. He threw up a second time tonight. He did not eat between vomiting, other than 1 treat. 2nd throw up was bile, the treat, and this small jellied-like particle was present. Not acting sick. Wants to play, acts hungry. Has had a few periods of lethargy but not abnormally so. What do you advise? What is the particle? Should he see a vet immediately?

Thank you for providing the picture of this particle! It almost looks tissue like, but I would expect to see blood in the vomit if it was tissue from his GI tract. It could be something he ate. Because he is otherwise acting normal, you can try a home remedy first before having to take James into the vet. I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feeding a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps :-)
