Does Fancy Feast cat food cause kidney failure or other health issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 9 lbs

I feed my cat fancy feast, but she also has Iams dry food beside her that she only eats when she's really hungry. I have recently heard that Fancy Feast is extremely bad for cats, it causes kidney failure and all sorts of things and is one of the worst foods you can give your cat. Is this true?

As long as a diet is AAFCO approved then it meets the nutritional needs for your cat. A diet is not the cause of kidney disease unless it contains toxic compounds, which Fancy Feast would not. If you are worried about preventing kidney disease then I would recommend feeding your cat a high moisture diet of canned wet food and reducing the amount of dry intake. Ensure that Alley drinks enough water and have bloodwork analyzed yearly.
