Dog ate strange object, acting weird. When do poisoning signs appear?

in the event my dog was poisoned, how long until symptoms appear? I have a small yard and my dog was eating a paper towel, which is not one of mine and came from over the fence. When I took it from him he growled and tried to bite me, which has never happen before in similar situations. I don't know if meat was in it or anything else. It does, however, smell like glass cleaner. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 65 lbs
