My dog has red eyes, no discharge. Is it an infection or irritation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 65 lbs

Hi there- I live in Uganda with my pup, about 1.5 years old "Duke" who has very distinct redness in the "whites " past the pupils. If you pull his eyelids back, both eyes are blood red but no discharge or irritation seems to be at play. He started playing with another dog regularly (local African breed) so I have concern it could be some bacterial infection or something if the other dog hasn't gotten the proper vaccines. Any ideas? Or time for a vet visit?

If there is no green/brown/yellow discharge leaking from the lids, or gluing the eyes shut at night, it's not likely infected at this point. The eyes may be very irritated. If you don't have access to plain tear gel eye lubricant, then you can put a warm water compress over the eyes (lids closed) at night to give him some soothing relief. If this doesn't help, set up a consult and I can give you some other ideas. Good luck!
