My dog has eye discharge and tear stains. How do I treat it safely?

My dog has discharge coming out of her eyes everyday(causing tear stains).She seems to have an infection but it doesnt seem so bad.Everytime i wipe away the discharge,i will have to wipe her eyeball too to remove the discharge and i try to do it as gentle as possible.Im afraid that i might be damaging her eyes.What should i do to stop the infection and prevent hurting her eyes? There as several types of infection that could be going on, so you'll want to be sure to visit your doctor before any progression of the infection occurs.
