Why is my puppy's diarrhea bloody, even though she's playful?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 16 days old | 4 lbs

I brought a brand new bichon puppy home on 4/1/17, born on 1/16/17. She was very nervous, and has diarrhea the next few days. Went to see vet, was instructed to give her plain chicken with rice, her poop seemed fine, went back to solid. She was good for a while, and now she's been having diarrhea after the first or second poop of the day. The diarrhea has a few blood drop at the end. Other than that, she's been fine, playful, full of energy, doesn't like her puppy chow, but loves chicken n

Congrats on your new puppy but I'm sorry CoCo has been having problems with diarrhea! I'm not sure if she has been dewormed or not, but intestinal worms could be a cause of her diarrhea with blood. I would get her a deworming treatment such as Panacur, which you can get OTC. She would need a second course of treatment two weeks after the first one ends to kill all the worms. If she is up to date on her deworming treatment, then I would have her seen by a vet for this. It's not an emergency because she is eating and playful, and I would have her seen by a vet in the morning. Should she become very lethargic, stops vomiting, stops eating altogether, or has more blood in her feces, then I would have her seen by a vet immediately.
