My Shih Tzu is vomiting foamy liquid and won't eat. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 12 days old

My Shih Tzu also vomitted something watery and foamy this morning after eating dog food. I'm worried because whenever I'd feed her, she'd just smell it but not eat it. But she would come back to the food after maybe 30 minutes and then eat. She doesn't seem to have the appetite that she had before. I don't know why. Please help.

Oh no, poor Bella! It could be that she is suffering from a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have a foreign body, or could have parvovirus if she isn't fully vaccinated. Should she not be fully vaccinated, she will need to see a vet immediately as parvo would be a differential. Parvo is too often deadly, and requires intensive supportive treatment at a vet's office for her best chance of survival. Should she be fully vaccinated, then I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.
