Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 month and 19 days old | 4.5 lbs

My partner just accidentally stepped on our 7 week old kittens paw as she was chasing his feet, she is her normal self eating and happy but she's limping, she doesn't mind if I touch the paw and she's still climbing things and walking around but the limp does worry me

Yes just monitor, it sounds like is a minor injury and if it was very serious she would not let you touch her paw at all. Everything should resolve in the next 48hours. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.

You should monitor her in the next couple days, i would expect it to get better unless there is a more serious injury. if it does not get better within 48 hours- take her to the vet to get it checked.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Savannah! Possible causes for the limp could be a muscle strain or sprain, bruise of the bone, a wound from the vase or it can still be a fracture (of bone or growth plate). The limping and hiding in corners likely indicates she is in pain. I recommend confining her for the night and taking her to the Vet in the morning for an exam if she is still limping. You can do more harm by bandaging the leg incorrectly and cats are extremely sensitive to human medications so I do not recommend giving her anything not prescribed by your Vet. I wish Savannah the very best!

You should call the vet and give him an update and ask if there is anything he did that would cause the kitten to limp. If he gave any vaccines or injections in a leg, etc. If not, you could rest him for a few days and see if it improves or take him back to that vet or a different vet for an examination. A vet could take an xray to make sure there isn't a break. Although, I think it would be very unlikely for a kitten to break a leg during an examination. Hope he feels better soon!

It is not impossible for them to get a cramp but that is not usually the case. Usually it is an injury to the bone, a ligament or a tendon in that leg. She may have fallen while jumping up onto something while you were gone?? Hard to say. If she is eating and drinking and doesn't have pain when you press on the leg then you could certainly elect to just monitor her for now and see if it resolves. If no improvement in a day or two then you should get her to your vet for an exam. Of course, if you are worried there is no harm in taking her in now. It is better to be safe than sorry. Hope this helps. Best wishes.
