My independent cat is suddenly clingy and aggressive. Is she pregnant?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 8 months old

I have 3 female cats, all short haired tabbys. My eldest cat, she is 5 and for the past few days she has been excessively clingy to me. She had always been quite independent and a bit aggressive when it comes to her personal space. She is hissing and growling at anyone who comes near me. If I close my bedroom door she starts frantically scratching and growling because she wants in. I want to know what can be happening here because this is getting a bit much.

If there is any chance she could be pregnant, this would be a reasonable cause for the type of behavior you are seeing, If not, there is something else called false pregnancy. This is when the body essentially tricks itself into thinking it is pregnant and as a result, you will see Kitty doing things a pregnant cat would do. This is not something that will last forever but can certainly persist for days to weeks.
