Why is my young dog not eating her food but acting normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 30 lbs

Hi there, so recently I've been noticing my dog hasn't been eating her food. She goes up to it, smells it, then walks away. I'm getting concerned because she is only a year old and this has never happened before. We can afforded surgery and just want answers. We tried seeing if she was diabetic but it turns out she's not. She also very energetic and spends a lot of time outside. I'm getting very worried and am running out of options. Please help your opinion and advice could really help. Thanks!

It may be that Bella is a little bored of her food, or may have an underlying illness causing her to not want to eat, however these usually present with other symptoms such as lethargy, vomiting, tender abdomen or diarrhea. You can try to entice her to eat by adding some plain boiled chicken or a little low-sodium chicken broth to her regular meal to encourage eating without digestive upset. If she continues to not be interested in eating, or starts to show other signs of illness, then seeking veterinary care is best for a complete exam.
