My outdoor cats are staying inside for a week. Will they use their litter box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 years old | 13 lbs

I plan to leave my 2 cats inside my house for 1 week with a cat sitter coming once a day to check their food/water. My question is they are used to going outside during the day (I have a doggie door for them) but because of coyotes I do not let them out after dark. They never use their kitty litter boxes at night so how will they do when they cannot go outside for one week. I think this is better than boarding them at my Vets where they will be locked in a cage for one week.

Cats are very smart creatures, so I am confident they will figure it out. You can always lock them in at night before you go on your trip to see how they do. However, I doubt they will have any issues going in the litterbox since this is a natural instinct for them to do so. If you are overly concerned I would suggest using Catattract litter which acts to lure cats to their litter box. You can also place several Pheromone diffusers (i.e. Feliway) in the home to help Emma and housemate remain calm while you are away. Safe travels on your trip and best of luck with your two kitties.
