Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 8 months and 15 days old | 52 lbs
My dog has had his neutering procedure 2.5 weeks ago. He wore his cone for this entire time, and has healed quite well. He recently started licking the area and it has become more pink in colour and the bump from the scar tissue enlarges when he licks it as well. Is this something that I should worry about?

That should be ideally checked by your veterinarian as the problem could be to either a tissue reaction from stitches or incomplete healing and small abdominal herniation. In case of abdominal/humbilical hernia, depending on the size, it should repaired surgically. In case of a reaction, anti-inflammatory meds are required. I would recommend to put the buster collar on to avoid further licking. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation (where you can post pictures ) if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.

It looks like he caused some mild bleeding while licking and a scab has formed. It is important to prevent him from continuing to traumatize the area or he may open the incision or cause an infection. If the suit is not adequate, you should get a “cone” ASAP and keep it on at all times until the area is healed. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach

Please put the cone back on him until the incision has completely healed. Your dog must not lick the incision as he licks bacteria into it which could cause infection. He also licks away new cells that grow into the wound to repair it. By licking these away he is keeping the wound from healing. If you see any discharge from the incision you will need to take Louie back to the vet for a recheck.
