My puppy has vomiting, diarrhea, and low energy. When to see vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 17 days old

I just bought a German Sheperd pup and the first day he was joyful and energetic but lately he has stopped eating and is very low on energy and looks droopy the whole time, sleeps a lot and throws up and has diarrhea. What should I do? Does this require immediate attention?

Vomiting and diarrhea in a puppy that is not fully vaccinated should be addressed quickly. Your veterinarian will be able to determine if the clinical signs you are seeing are the result of something like parasites (easily treatment with medication) or if there is a more serious bacterial / viral infection that must be dealt with. I also would like to recommend separating Max from any other dogs you may have in the house as it is possible he is carrying some transmissible. Because puppies, due to their small size and stature, are able to dehydrate quickly, I would recommend going to the vet sooner than later.

I would recommend having Finn seen tonight. Puppies do not have a lot of energy and water reserves and therefore get dehydrated quickly. And a puppy should not go that long without eating as they can develop a low blood sugar. There are numerous potential causes of diarrhea and anorexia in puppies including parvovirus. In my opinion, it would be best to have him seen soon so that treatment can be started. The longer you wait and his disease progresses, the longer it usually takes for them to get better. I hope that Finn feels better soon. Best of luck to you both. There are numerous potential causes of diarrhea and anorexia and puppies
