My dog vomited blood & bloody stool. Could it be an obstruction?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year old | 55 lbs

my dog has vomited blood (twice- one a few weeks ago and one this week) and has had bloody sorta soft stool, didn't wanna eat but is eating fine now, done X-rays and blood works all clear. Suspected ibs so now on medications and special food. if it was an obstruction would his poops still be normal shape or thinner? I'm sure that if the vet suspected an obstruction she would've done more testing. I'd just like some peace of mind.

I'm sorry Spock isn't doing well at the moment! If he had a foreign body causing a a complete or partial obstruction, I would expect to see diarrhea or a complete cessation of pooping. I agree that if the vet suspected a foreign body, she would have have done more testing such as an exploratory surgery. I would keep giving Spock his medications as prescribed and the diet. I hope this gives you peace of mind and he keeps getting better!
