Do kittens really feel pain when they die from Fading Kitten Syndrome?

I am so sorry for the loss of your kittens. Unfortunately some kitties just don’t make it due to a condition called fading kitten syndrome. This can cause up to 30% of the litter to suddenly pass between 2-4 weeks of age due to an underlying genetic defect. This isn’t something that you would have likely been able to help your kitties with so don’t blame yourself. Again I am sorry for your loss and at least the kitties are not suffering. Fading kitten syndrome is not really specific to any one disease, but is a term we use when a kitten is dying. This can be very difficult to manage and requires the help of a veterinarian immediately. Your description of him definitely sounds serious, so my best recommendation is to get him to a vet as soon as possible. For now, you can help keep his blood sugar up by giving a little honey or karo syrup on her gums. You can also try to give a little water in his mouth with a syringe. He may have had an injury, been hit by a car or he had a congenital heart defect that caused a blood clot at the bifurcation of the aorta (that paralyses hind legs and hurts terribly). Only hypertension might be vaguely related to discomfort, but this has not been proven in cats.

I am so sorry. Unfortunately there is a reason for kittens being pushed away by mom, or being separated: They usually have some birth defect and nature is cruel. It would take away energy and strength from the other kittens if it was to be raised or needed extra care. So there is a very high possibility that this kitten had a serious defect and therefore did not make it. There is also a reason for cats having up to three litters a year: Kitten mortality is high, especially in "the wild", so they have up to 18 kittens/year to make sure some survive. Again, I am very sorry you lost this baby.

It can be extremely difficult to get intravenous access in small kittens, especially with poor circulation and sedation is often used beforehand. The disoriented response is very rare but it is unlikely your kitten was actually aware as certain sedatives can cause :dissociation' where there is no link between behavior and sensation leading to erratic movements and delusions. In people, amnesia is often reported after the sedation wears off with no recollections of the effects.

It really depends on what finally causes the cat to expire. Age alone is not a disease, but diseases and organ failure are more likely as the cat ages. Some diseases like kidney failure, cancer and certain infections do tend to get progressively worse over time, which leads to weight loss and usually some degree of suffering before the normal body functions can't cope anymore. Other diseases like heart disease (specifically a heart attack), or stroke can result in a sudden death where no visible signs of disease or suffering are noted prior to the incident. Usually, there are some signs of slowing down, or illness prior to the time that they die as an old cat, but it may not be noticed by the owner, because the changes can be gradual and cats will hide their illness well.
