My cat had one kitten, but her belly is hard after birth. Is she okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Turkish Angora | Female | 2.5 lbs

My cat gave birth to only one kitten about 6 or 7 hours ago. Although she has not encountered bleeding or any discomfort but her belly still feels hard and swollen. Does it seem to you that she still holds dead kittens in her womb? Should I worry about a possible death of the mother? What do you recommend for me to do? Thank you...

She may have more kittens in her uterus, and maybe one kitten is blocking the soft birth canal. Please take Tuti to a veterinarian right away. This is life-threatening to your cat as well as the kittens. The kittens may still be alive, so please do not wait and see. This is an emergency.

The uterus is still enlarged 24 hours after birth, and you might be able to feel it in her belly. If her belly seems to be contracting or if you’re not sure how many kittens she had prior to whelping you should take her to your vet for x-rays.
